The wrestling pre-party starts at 7:30pm and then will no doubt continue through the regular Citadel play party which kicks off at 9pm. Just wanted to give everyone the 'heads up'. Hope to see you there! (The Citadel is around 9th and Market but I'm not 100% sure of the exact address...)

Foundation Statement

‘Get a Grip’, a women’s empowerment program currently being established through the Open Door Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy, is founded on the principal that the measure of control every individual has over his or her own life is, in part, based on the measure of control they have over their own body. No matter how wealthy, educated, or intelligent you may be, if other people are able to control you physically, the choices you make in life are only available to you so long as no one stronger chooses to take them away. As a result, the decisions you make cannot but be influenced by a desire to placate those more physically powerful than you, in order to ensure that this will not happen.

Women, by virtue of being 'the weaker sex', go through life with a constant awareness of the fragility of their own emancipation. At some level we know that the only thing standing between ourselves and the kind of domestic/sexual enslavement seen throughout history is men's voluntary adherence to the established laws of 'civilized conduct'.

It is the aim of ‘Get a Grip’ to teach women how to be physically aggressive from a place of joy and passion, rather than from a mind-set based in fear, hate and anger. We strive to give our female students the skill and confidence to defend themselves. Yet because we do so in a non-threatening, supportive, 'play-based' environment, wherein men and women work together as partners and train as equals, male physicality no longer becomes identified with something that's 'bad', 'scary', or even 'intimidating'. And because of this, the women who train in our Jiu Jitsu/submission wrestling/self-defense classes will be significantly less subject to the influence of male intimidation in whatever future choices they will make throughout the rest of their lives. It is only by gaining real control over their own bodies; only by having the ability to say 'no' or 'yes' and mean it, can women truly achieve that thing which defines each member of the human race as a 'moral entity'. And that idea which is the true foundation to all claims to equality, and which, in turn, defines the measure of respect awarded to every individual; can be summarized in two words - Free Choice.

Until we are able to joyously take control of our own bodies, and act in the world without fear of physical violence, only then can we fully exist as equal members of society. We must be able to act with a courage not founded on men’s good will or peaceful intent, but in our own knowledge and skill so that as individuals we can respond appropriately to physical danger if and when the need arises. Because in order for it to be respected and acknowledged, equality, like freedom, must be taken…not granted.

In January I posted a notice on the 'Women in the Martial Arts' tribe message board about a wrestling seminar I was conducting. Several women showed up for the training and I promised everyone in class that a regularly schedualed women's submission wrestling class was immanent. Unfortunately things didnt happen as I had planned. (Sigh)

I've been waiting and waiting for the chaos in my my life to sort of settle down before commiting myself to something like this, but you know what? Life just doesn't work that way. Screw it. Let's do the class anyway! That was a big part of the motivation behind starting the Academy in the first place darn it! To get more women involved with submission wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!!!

If those of you reading this havent attended any of my classes or seminars in the past, the thing about the way I teach the women's classes is that the focus is more on technical precision, getting a good work out, and above all, HAVING A GOOD TIME. 'Winning' is defined by everyone in class walking off the mat at the end of the training in a better state of mind and body than when they first arrived. I think of it as being more along the lines of 'Fitness Wrestling' rather than the kind of training geared towards competition or tournaments. If that's what you're looking for I can steer you into the regular classes once you get comfortable on the mat, but what I've found is that most women really just come to class to get a good work out and have fun. The fact that they can do this and also learn some self-defense skills as a side benefit is just an added bonus.

* This is a no-gi (no uniform), submission wrestling class for beginning, female, grappling students.

* All ages and fitness levels are welcome.

* Price: $150 per five week session.

* Date: Women's Class starts AUGUST 1st

* Times: Monday and Wednesday evenings from 8-10pm

We played for very low states, i.e penny ante--max raise was a quarter. It was mostly good for getting laundry money. We always brought good wine and good food and would play as late as we could stand, or people would crash on the couch. Woman would invite their co-workers, sisters, and other friends until we were 2 or 3 tables of 4--6. It was great!
-WHEN: Sunday, 1:00pm June 27, 2004 Pacific Standard Time
-WHERE: To be determined, somewhere, San Jose
-WHAT: Yeah, after the last FANTASTIC "No Smelly Boys" Mixer, we're doing it again. It was a great turn out...there were twenty of us girls having lunch at Olive Garden in Blossom Hill, which we pretty much occupied the whole room. We then went to go shop for lingerie at Oakridge Mall to past time for the next showing of the agreed upon movie and we can't help it, but we have to do another one of these gatherings again. Originally it was supposed to be a brunch and an early movie show, but since there were alot of us and the conversation went so long we had missed out on the preferable time for the movie. This was pretty much a joint event among us women's group of yahoo, msn and mixermixer. I'll also post this as well on BAL, that way we can all mingle, it usually starts out as a big group, but eventually once you find someone you click with, it'll fall into place where you would want to get to know another person and find out and learn from their experiences and get some insights. Us women need the support of friendship in any oppurtunity we can get. So, I'm hoping if you have the time or you can make the time to come out and join us. This would be a fantastic way to get out there and enjoy the company among other women with those that have the same thought process, belief system and emotional state. Well, I hope to see some of you there, that way we can set up something and discuss on further of things to do for this group.

Can I have your suggestions of where we should go for lunch - preferably near a mall.

After which I will post this event to get a head count on who's coming and the update of the agreed upon idea (which of course would be the majority), we very much would appreciate your input on this.

Ok, so far I have been setting up things that I plan to attend to by posting the event, but so far no one has responded back to them by rsvping. So tell me what you like to do and where and what city, that way we can can get this group going. The reason for this group is the diversity and being able to try new things and to be open to new places - so please let me know and I'll see if we can set it all up.
I know that most of you had given your suggesstion of things to do, but we of course need to take the initiative to plan on doing these things. We need to get some organizational effort to make this happen if anyone would like to host, you are very much welcome to do so. May it be to check out a club, you can set up a meeting beforehand, so that way you get the chance to get to know the other person better before hanging out with them and maybe discuss on meeting somewhere afterwards and do something else. I also hope that this can be a group of people who can eventually feel comfortable and trust each other, but that comes with time and getting to know each other, so my suggestion beside the girlie lunch, which would include other groups of ladies there. I'd like to set up our own "Event Idea Brunch" somewhere in between san jose and the city, probably Palo Alto area, since that's the first place that I can think of right now. I'll look into that and I'll look forward to hearing from the rest of you and meeting you all.

Hello, I'm 25f in E. San Jose. I have been searching for someone who is interested in being a workout buddy and taking some classes with me. I'm looking to spend about $50-$75 a month, so they would have to be able to do the same. I'd be willing to go someplace around San Jose or Sunnyvale (or in between) and possibly even a little further, 2-3 days a week. Is anyone interested or already goes and can suggest a good place? I'm open to alternative suggestions as well. I'm looking to find an activity that is fun (which means not just going to a gym and hopping on a machine), interactive, social, basically something that I could really get into and enjoy. Going to the gym or for a walk is just so boring to me and also, learning a little self defense never hurt anyone.
warned... I'm afraid Consistent Flakers will be removed!!!!

What do you mean by "Consistent Flakers"? If you mean people who say they will attend but don't, that's fine. If you assume that by joining this tribe I'll be in regular attendance, well, that's just silly and what I would consider an unreasonable expectation.
We all have lives. Only punish the people who advertise their presence somewhere and don't live up to it.
Lorien wrote:
Yes, you do have a good point there. I'm fairly new to this site, but I'll get around into finding out ways to resolving this issue if it happens in the future. I'm not really expecting everyone that has joined this tribe to attend to the events, but those that plan or will hold an event should at least keep everyone posted if in case they cancel. You are so right about this: "Only punish the people who advertise their presence somewhere and don't live up to it." I will surely follow this through. Well, if you have any other suggestion, I will very much accept it and try my best to resolve any problems there is. I hope it's okay with you if
I post these messagee to let everyone know of this, just to clarify this misunderstanding. Thanks,
That sounds like an excellent plan. Go ahead and use my words if it helps explain what you mean.

I just wanted to make sure that the expectation wasn't that since I joined I would be at every event, because well, that's just not going to happen, and if that *was* the expectation, then I would remove myself from the tribe because that would be the appropriate action on my part.
Lorien wrote:
Thanks for accepting my permission, well I hope it would as well be reassuring to the other members that read the message. Anyhow, I'll probably do an e-vite thing where the
other members can rsvp to an event that way the one
that organizes the event will have a head count on who
is attending...that is still up in the air.
